Microneedling FAQs
Everything you need to know before your treatment
Microneedling is one of the most effective treatments for improving overall skin health, stimulating collagen production and addressing a wide range of skin concerns. Below you'll find answers to the questions I am asked most often before treatment.
If you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
What is microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatment that uses tiny sterile needles to create controlled micro-channels within the skin.
This stimulates your body's natural healing response, encouraging the production of collagen and elastin to improve skin texture, tone and overall skin quality.
What skin concerns can microneedling treat?
Microneedling can help improve:
-
Fine lines and wrinkles
-
Acne scarring
-
Surgical scars
-
Enlarged pores
-
Uneven skin texture
-
Pigmentation
-
Sun-damaged skin
-
Dull or tired-looking skin
-
Overall skin quality
What products are used during treatment?
Depending on your individual skin concerns and treatment goals, premium serums may be used during your treatment, including:
-
Hyaluronic Acid
-
NAD3+
-
Salmon DNA
-
Polynucleotides (where appropriate)
The most suitable option will be discussed during your consultation.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on your skin concerns.
For general skin rejuvenation, a course of 3–6 treatments is often recommended, spaced approximately 4 weeks apart.
Some clients choose to continue with maintenance treatments every few months.
When will I see results?
Many clients notice brighter, healthier-looking skin within a few days.
Collagen production continues for several weeks, with improvements becoming more noticeable after each treatment.
The best results are usually seen after completing a recommended course.
Does microneedling hurt?
A topical numbing cream can be applied before treatment to maximise comfort.
Most clients describe the sensation as mild and very tolerable.
Is there any downtime?
Downtime is usually minimal.
Immediately after treatment your skin may appear:
-
Red
-
Warm
-
Slightly swollen
-
Tight
This is completely normal and usually settles within 24–48 hours.
How long does the appointment take?
Appointments usually take around 45–60 minutes, depending on the treatment area and whether a numbing cream is required.
Is a consultation required?
Yes.
Every client receives a comprehensive consultation before treatment. This includes assessing your skin, discussing your concerns, reviewing your medical history and creating a personalised treatment plan.
Can I have treatment at my consultation?
In many cases, yes.
If you are medically suitable and wish to proceed, treatment can often be carried out on the same day following your consultation.
Who is not suitable for microneedling?
Microneedling may not be suitable if you:
-
Are pregnant or breastfeeding (depending on the products used)
-
Have an active skin infection
-
Have active cold sores
-
Have severe acne flare-ups
-
Have certain skin conditions
-
Are taking certain medications
-
Are medically unsuitable following consultation
Suitability will always be assessed before treatment.
What should I avoid after treatment?
For the first 24–48 hours, avoid:
-
Makeup (for at least 24 hours)
-
Swimming
-
Saunas and steam rooms
-
Strenuous exercise
-
Excessive sun exposure
-
Active skincare products such as retinol, AHAs and BHAs
Use a gentle cleanser, moisturiser and SPF as advised.
Can microneedling be combined with other treatments?
Yes.
Depending on your skin concerns, microneedling may be combined with treatments such as skin boosters or polynucleotides as part of a personalised treatment plan.
This will be discussed during your consultation.
Is microneedling safe?
When performed by a qualified medical professional using sterile equipment and high-quality products, microneedling has an excellent safety profile.
As with any aesthetic treatment, potential risks and side effects will always be discussed before treatment.
Will one treatment be enough?
Many clients notice an improvement after just one session.
However, for concerns such as acne scarring, pigmentation or deeper lines, a course of treatments is usually recommended to achieve the best possible results.
